Imam Ibn Kathir al-Makki (45-120 AH) was a prominent figure in the field of Qira’at and is considered one of the seven primary reciters of the Quran. Born in Makkah, Ibn Kathir grew up learning from the Tabi’un’s generation, the Sahabah’s successors. He was known for his eloquent recitation and mastery of the Arabic language. Among his teachers were the famous companions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) such as Anas Ibn Malik and Abdullah Ibn Az-Zubayr.
Imam Ibn Kathir al-Makki (665–738 CE) was one of the seven primary Quran reciters, deeply revered in Makkah. Born in the city of Makkah itself, he learned the Quranic recitation directly from companions of the Prophet ﷺ and became a key figure in the Islamic scholarly world. Ibn Kathir’s recitation was passed down through two major narrators (Qunbul and Al-Bazzi), and his qira’ah is still practiced widely in various parts of the Muslim world.
Ibn Kathir al-Makki was highly respected for his impeccable precision in recitation and articulation. He was known to combine clarity with a deep understanding of the divine message. His teachings and methods influenced generations of reciters, particularly in Makkah, where his influence still echoes today.
He was the muadthin at the Masjid al-Ḥarām at Makkah, and the leading qārī of Makkah during his time.
Al-Bazzi (Abu Hasan Ahmad ibn Abdullah ibn Al-Qasim) was born in 170 AH and passed away in 250 AH. He was the chief reciter of Makkah and also the muezzin (caller to prayer) at Masjid Al-Haram.

Qunbul (Abu Amr Muhammad ibn Abdur-Rahman ibn Khalid Al-Makki) was born in 195 AH and passed away in 291 AH. He was regarded as one of the leading Quranic reciters of his time, particularly in the Hijaz region.
