Imam Abu Amr al-Basri (born 68 AH/688 CE – died 154 AH/771 CE) was one of the ten primary reciters of the Quran. His full name was Zabbān ibn al-‘Alā’ ibn ‘Ammār al-Mazini al-Basri. Born in Makkah, he grew up in Basra, where he gained prominence as a scholar of Quranic recitation. He learned from many scholars, including those in Makkah, Madinah, Kufa, and Basra, and was known for his mastery of Quranic recitation and his ability to read the Quran with precision and clarity. His Qira’ah was preserved by his two main narrators, Hafs ibn ‘Umar ad-Duri and Abu Shu’ayb Salih ibn Ziyad as-Susi.
Imam Abu Amr al-Basri was not only a master of Quranic recitation but also a renowned linguist, contributing significantly to Arabic grammar. His influence is seen in the Basri school of grammar, where his understanding of language helped shape the study of Arabic for future generations.
He was the chief qārī and the first to compile different qiraāt, despite the fact that he was blind.
